Christopher Walters, Assistant Conductor
Chris
Walters is in the Doctor of Musical Arts program
in Choral Conducting at Boston University, studying
with Dr. Ann Howard Jones. Currently he also serves
as Music Director/Organist at First Baptist Church
of Wollaston, and maintains a private voice studio.
Prior to Boston, Walters taught
for three years in Jacksonville, IL as Vocal Music
Director at Jacksonville High School and Turner
Junior High – in three years building a
fully-graded junior high and high school vocal
music program. In 2008, Walters organized a highly
successful performance tour to Walt Disney World
in Orlando, where the Jacksonville High School
Madrigals received a prestigious invitation to
sing at the Hall of Presidents. Choirs under his
direction have garnered Superior ratings at regional
festivals and contests, where they have been consistently
praised for their technical accuracy and quality
of musicianship.
A young composer, Walters’
original composition Weary with Toil was chosen
as the winner of the 2006 American Choral Directors
Association (ACDA) Choral Composition Contest.
This piece was premiered at the 2006 ACDA Summer
Re-Treat weekend and was conducted by John Rutter’s
successor at Clare College (Cambridge, England)
– Tim Brown. He is also the recipient of
several commissions and grants, including a research-grant
for choral composition from Vanderbilt University,
resulting in a 30-minute choral cantata based
on the story of King David.
In 2007, Walters completed his
second year as a conducting apprentice at the
Berkshire Choral Festival in Sheffield, where
he participated in masterclasses with Jane Glover,
Robert Page, and Kathy Saltzman Romey, among others.
He holds degrees in music education, sacred music,
and choral conducting from Vanderbilt University
and Emory University.
